2018 can be said to be a year of big hits and breakthroughs for some artistes in the Nigerian music space. The music industry has been a buzz with different songs setting the social media ablaze with some trailed with controversy.
Indigenous rapper, Olamide who had a successful European music tour, early in the year dropped his single, “Science Student” and the song got some knocks from the older generation on account of it subtly promoting drug abuse and intakes of codeine, tramadol and all sorts.
The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) also banned the song, ‘Science Student’, a street song on the airwaves of its broadcast partners. The song became more popular on account of this as it is the norm whenever a controversial but club banger gets prohibited. Olamide didn’t rest on his oars and released others.
The gospel scene too has been busy this year with singers and music ministers churning greats and inspirational songs that its videos have become one of the most watched songs on YouTube.
Wizkid’s ‘Fever’, Olamide’s ‘Motigbana’ and Davido’s ‘Assurance’ make up the list of most searched songs on Google Nigeria for 2018.

“Na Re Kele Mo” By Tim Godfrey Featuring Travis Greene:
Tim Godfrey, a gospel singer of more than a decade is a story in persistence. The song, Na Re Kele, featuring Grammy Award Nominee, Travis Greene tells of his grass to grace story. Tim Godfrey and his band made a statement with his album titled ‘Fearless’ in 2017 and he was the toast of EXPERIENCE 2017 mega concert. ‘Nare Ke Le’ is another song that has taken a higher dimensions as an international song. This song was performed by Travis Green in ‘Fearless Victory’ during his cross over tour while the song is still yet to be released. Nara means Thank You in Igbo language. In his own words, Tim says: “This song speaks about me, my story, my journey, all I have been through and how far God has brought me over the years; it is my song of gratitude to him, I am simply saying, for all you have done for me, please accept my thanks.” The song Nara was first launched at the “Na You Be God” crooner’s Live Concert tagged Fearless Victory 2018 which was held in five different cities across the country.
‘Amaka’ by Tu Baba Ft Peruzzi:
Arguably the song of the year by music followers and analysts. Tu Baba who’s one of the most talented singers and recording artistes of his peers released ‘Amaka’, a hit song and club banger in June 2018.
The song which featured DMW singer, Peruzzi, has a melodious tune with different octaves and juices that make a song acceptable. It has a greater chance being the Song of The Year at the Headies and Sound City Awards. Produced by Obi Prosper popularly known as Speroachbeatz, ‘Amaka’ is one of the songs that make a person go gaga. The producer met 2face now Tu Baba by chance and for the first time at a studio after Peruzzi called him for a meeting. “I wasn’t with my laptop, I had no idea what to do, but I just improvised with what was in the studio. I knew the song would be a hit record the moment I finished working on it. Peruzzi on his own is a vibe, 2baba is a legend and bringing Peruzzi and 2face together, I knew it would be a vibe.”
‘Assurance’ By Davido:
Davido’s ‘Assurance’ could as well be the one of the most downloaded songs of 2018. Released early in the year. ‘Assurance (Chioma My Lover)’ is a love song professed by David Adeleke himself to his girlfriend and lover Chioma the chef. The song and others by Davido have proved him as the most bankeable artiste of 2018.
‘Ire’ By Adekunle Gold:
Contemporary urban singer and performer, Adekunle Gold, keeps waxing stronger in his musical career. Having dropped his maiden album titled GOLD in 2017 and performed in his One Night Stand concert. Gold is a voice in the Nigerian music scene giving alternative sounds and Melody to the hip hop music genre. Ire is a feel good song and has been performed live on different gigs including the AMVCA 2018 awards.
‘Lova Lova’ By Tiwa Savage Ft Duncan Mighty
Tiwa Savage is the Woman singer of 2018! And Lova Lova, a reggae infused hiphop song featuring Duncan Mighty is Tiwa’s best songs aside the one she did with Wizkid and Omarion. The AFRIMA 2018 Female Artiste of The Year, has painted 2018 in gold. No doubts Tiwa’s musical prowess but her insatiable love to push herself some more and bring out something fresh is what has been going for her. Her O2 Arena Live Concert packaged by SMADE entertainment was a huge success and she got a great attendance. The Tiwa Savage brand and music keep breaking her own records.
‘Excess Love’ By Mercy Chinwo:
The song, ‘Excess Love’ has suddenly brought Mercy Chinwo out of Oblivion. Mercy Chinwo first came to prominence after winning the Etisalat and Pepsi sponsored Nigeria Idol Season 2 in 2012. After then, nothing was heard of her until she landed her first movie role in Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson’s movie, ‘House of Gold’ starring alongside Yvonne Nelson, Majid Michel and self-styled singer, Onawumi, among others. Mercy Chinwo was nominated at the 2013 Ghana Movie Awards for best music, original song.
In 2015, her maiden album ‘Testimony’ was released produced by Rotimi Keys. 2018 seems her breakthrough year having performed at Unusual Mega Praise Concert last month. ‘Excess Love’ is a sonorous song sung on the lips of Christian faithful in Nigeria and beyond.
‘Motigbona’ by Olamide
Olamide’s ‘Motigbona’ is a great song of 2018 and one of the evidence that makes the rapper a versatile music Artiste. After songs like Science Student and endless collaborations, the singer keeps reaping the street giving them what they want. Motigbona is Olamide’s third single of the year. His annual concert slated for December is one of the most anticipated concerts of the year
‘Logan Ti Ode’ By TY Bello Ft Tope Alabi
Tope Alabi brings her signature voice imprint into this song which is played at every local music store in Lagos on account of its high sales aside the soul lifting potential. The song by ace singer cum photographer and mother of twins, TY Bello, is a novel idea of bringing like minds into a project.
‘Legbe Legbe’ by Mr Real
The song since late last year was played in virtually every club. ‘Legbe Legbe’ is your typical street song with a single along chorus. The song brought the singer, Mr Real into limelight.
