Lord Echendu: Celebrating an uncommon achiever

One of the flaws of our society today is that outstanding individuals who are blazing the trail in their chosen career, profession or personal life, are often not celebrated. And this has created a dysfunctional system that discourages hardworking people, while encouraging young ones to look up to the wrong societal models and getting involved in dubious get-rich-quick schemes that have continued to taint our collective image as a nation.

An inspirational figure who has consistently set the pace as an entrepreneur is Engr. Echendu Ndubuisi Anthony aka Lord Echendu. Born on the 28th of October 1985 in Port harcourt, he is the seventh of ten children in the family of the Late Nigeria army general (rtd.) Chief Echendu Christopher Francis Wichendu of Obio Akpor Local Givernment Area in Rivers state.

Growing up, Echendu picked up a very early interest in business. He also developed a love for engineering which stemmed from watching his father who also served for several years as an automobile and electrical engineer for the Rivers State government.

An unending pursuit for knowledge

Encouraged by his father, he went on to study Chemical Engineering at the University College London, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in 2007. Lord Echendu considers himself to be a life-long learner, and so after his first degree, he has continued to acquire additional professional certifications in leadership and business management from prestigious institutions such as King’s Entrepreneurship Institute UK, Harvard Business School, International Business and Management Institute Cambridge, and the Metropolitan Business School London.

Diversified business interests

After his education, Echendu registered his first business, Esh Services at the age of 23 which focused on warehouse construction. In late 2009, through sheer doggedness he founded Echendu Oil and Gas, and started approaching oil companies in the UK with prosposals to help them in acquiring offshore equipment at a more cost-effective rate, he secured some contracts and slowly expanded his business to the international conglomerate that it is today. He now sits on the board of the Echendu Group of Companies as CEO, with diversified business interest in transportation, logistics, financial services, energy, real estate and hospitality, megastores, agribusiness, oil and gas, and travel and tourism.

Awards and accolades

Undoubtedly, Lord Echendu Ndubuisi has done really and attained great heights in the global business space. Although his exact net worth is unknown, as he has deliberately kept it undisclosed in several media interviews as he chooses not to focus on his money, but his numerous awards and recognitions are well known, and we will attempt to capture a few here.

Lord Echendu is an engineer by profession and training, and this earned him the membership of the Nigeria Society of Petroleum Engineers.

He is also a devoted Christian and committed member of the Catholic Church who was knighted into the Catholic Order of St. Anthony for his “services to the growth of entrepreneurship” in April 2010.

Lord Echendu is the receipient of several awards, some of which include the Best Global CEO at the Afriwards and a two-time winner of the Young Creative CEO at the UK Biz Awards in 2011 and 2018.

Due to the international presence of his businesses and charity works, Lord Echendu Ndubuisi gained recognition from the United Nations, and was appointed as an ambassador for Modern UN, he gave the keynote address at the UN’s Peace Across Borders in 2019.

In 2020, he was appointed as a member of the Global Chambers of Business Leaders, one of the world’s most influential group of governmental leaders, CEOs and executives, entrepreneurs, investors and business and industry leaders that help in shaping the global economy through a framework of policies that encourage sustainable business growth.

In all, Lord Echendu still strives to give back to the society through his non-profit organisation, Echendu Unify, which has carried out interventions in orphanages, prisons, elderly homes and in rural communities.
